We talked about Victor's responsibility for his creation. Not only that, but does Victor's taking responsibility for his actions make him more human? Is victors creation monster, or is Victor himself the monster? After Victor created his first monster, who, being an isolated creature named long for female companionship. Victor refuse to make another monster, thinking that it would be the same mistake. The question is, however, was this step of responsibility, or simply a step made from feeder and lack of thought. One could say that refusing to create another monster for the original creation would ,in fact, the monster us. Since Victor was the only one who could create someone that the monster could loaf, one feel sympathy for the monster, instead of Victor. After all, with some extra thought, Victor could've made a sterile female. Victor has learned the hard way that through receiving great power comes the burden of great responsibility. This book, shows that " playing God" can have serious and life altering consequences. The anti-scientific vibes that come from this theme are reinforce what it is observed that the actual process of creating the monster is altogether skipped. Most of the detailed the book is left to description of nature, and relationships with other people.
Relating to other people, at as shown in this book, can also be applied to the college atmosphere. As college students, will all encounters certain professors that wold discouraged us were make us feel last, and we'll also find professors that help us grow a students, and also was people Dearie is important to know that we can learn from both of these types of people. Another lesson that can be learned from this book relating to college, is the fact that this new atmosphere with such isolation, can result in great personal reflection. To illustrate this, we can recall that any time that there was great personal growth, their woes, in fact, isolation. For example, when Walton was stuck in the Arctic with his boat, it was only then that he was able to stop, and take the time to actually find Victor and hear this strange, and disturbing story here it also in Victor wanted to grow, wanted to think you go off by himself and his boat, and think by himself. It is also easy to point out, but the monster also had great personal growth when he was on his own without Victor. Now that we are college students and we no longer have the protection of our parents, we may very well learned the lessons of life and we that we don't actually feel comfortable with. It is now that we will find out we really are, we can really handle, and what we can and cannot do.
It is interesting to ponder what it is in science that we still do not know. There will always be a gap between what really exists, what is the truth, and what we as human beings actually know about the universe. It seems that the monster is a symbol that modern science will never be able to catch up with the truths of the universe. Victor will never be able to understand what is going to monster's mind, whether or not he has a soul, or whether or not he will ever be forgiven for tampering with such delicate balance that is life. One could hope that as long as their minds who can question, as long as their voices that are willing to speak out, but someday, perhaps we will know little bit more about the monsters in humans within all of us.
i actually liked the frankenstein discussion more than i thought i would. i disliked having to read a specific version of frankenstein, and it is kind of hectic to read it when you are trying to pack and everything before moving in to IWU. but i did read it, and i liked hearing everyone's point of view. Professor Moralee did a good job of directing our thoughts with certain questions. I liked how the discussion made me see deeper aspects of the book that i dont even understand, like Victor's relationships with women and the role of responsibility. I think Frankenstein was also a good length for students to read- not too long. Overall i really enjoyed discussing the book and hearing the different viewpoints. I wouldnt mind doing something like this again. I also thought the discussion was a good length of time. I did not get bored or anxious. So, overall it was a good experience.
My discussion group was in the Dolan formal lounge, and we had some very good discussion going.
The most interesting point presented was similarities between Frankenstein and the monster. We discussed this as a dopplganger (we weren't entirely sure of this). More to the point, the monster and Frankenstein are self-absorbed, highly intelligent creatures that think more for the moment than anything longterm. Also, they are inclined to decline responsiblility for their actions. Frankenstien blames the monster for his deeds, while ignoring the fact that he abandoned the creature to which he was god. Meanwhile the monster blamed Frankenstien for his wretched existence that pushed him to commit murder (see epigraph), without acknowledging the fact that it was indeed his own life to make of what he would, despite his lonely beginnings. True virtue is seen only in the face of prejudice, injustice, and other shortcomings of society. How easy is it to be nice when everyone else is nice to you?
The monster himself is never given a name, accentuating his separation from the society in which everything has a name.
On a more asthetic level, we thought the book was dark, despite the very Romantic descriptions of Nature.
Also, on the subject of Romantacism, we (or, at least I) decided that Romantic writing is best in poetry form, as the extreme emotions are not as sustainable over longer works (like this book) (note: "oh woe is my soul" or similar phrases should only be used once in a book IF EVER).
Who do you identify with? There are some on the monsters side, while others defend Victor pointing out his growth over the novel. It's an interesting insight into our own characters, as we sort through our sympathies.
A topic that found its way into my group's discussion was that of how the atmosphere in the story always reflected Victor's mood and state of mind. Also, Victor's sexuality came into question and we found that many parallels between this story and the book of Genesis are present. A question of how appropriate it would be to kill the monster arose, and we decided that the time the act would be committed would be a key component in making such a decision.
I feel that the frankenstein monster did not actually exist and that it was just a mental hallucination of victor frankenstein who, when picked up by walton, spread his thoughts to the sailor. in doing this he got walton to believe him as well, and maybe spread his disease to walton.
The fact that the two (monster and creator) are never seen toghether in the book till the end by walton strenghtens this viewpoint.
as for all the killings, i believe justine did kill william, that the irish islanders killed henry clerval because they were angered by his constant rabbling about going to india, and that elizabeth killed herself, not being able to bear the fact that she had married her cousin.
all these killings seemed to be from the monster IN THE EYES OF VICTOR. he also hallucinated the black marks on their necks.
where his condition originated, i cannot be sure, but i feel that when he went to college and started learning philosophy and the arts, he went insane and to comfort his hunger BELEIVED he created another being from dead tissue.
however his madness went out of control and he could not control it anymore, causing him to conjure up a monster instead of thinking he created a human.

Just bringing some things to light about 'Kunaey Garg'theory about the monster not existing. If the monster did not exist then what was the thing Walton saw travelling across the life? 'a being of giangantic stature'He had not met Frankenstein then, so it could not have been a disease. No one else would be on the ice except for Frankenstein and the Monster.
This book is definitely a classic! Victor and his creation was something that would of seemed out of the world in Mary Shelley's time and it really reflects better within the modern day. As technology advances, so does curiosity and to what extent we can do. It was a mistake that Victor created that monster, just because he was miserable and not accepted by mankind, he should of never done it and at the same time, it was such a bittersweet point when Victor had to decide whether or not to create a female companion for the monster.
Many people say that had Victor created the creature's mate everything would have been fine but I don't think that is the case. When Victor speaks with his creation in the ice caves near his home, the creature states, “It is with considerable difficulty that I remember the original era of my being: all the events of that period appear confused and indistinct. A strange multiplicity of sensations seized me, and I saw, felt, heard, and smelt at the same time; and it was, indeed, a long time before I learned to distinguish between the operations of my various senses.” (Shelley 105). In this passage the creature is explaining his first feelings in life as he awakens and begins to wander about exploring existence. The creature is not capable of even perceiving Victor to have run away and reject him. His first perceived rejection by man is not until he comes upon the shepherd’s hut.
“Finding the door open, I entered. An old man sat in it, near a fire, over which he was preparing his breakfast. He turned on hearing a noise; and perceiving me, shrieked loudly, and quitting the hut, ran across the fields with a speed of which his debilitated form hardly appeared capable. His appearance, different from any I had ever before seen, and his flight, somewhat surprised me.” (Shelley 108). This is his first perceived interaction with humans and while he is rejected, he still does not understand. It is not until he arrives in a village shortly after, that he feels the rejection. He is assaulted by the villagers with stones and many other weapons before he runs and “fearfully took refuge in a low hovel” (Shelley 109). This is the first negative impression the creature receives of man and even still he does not understand why. I think this is a critical point of the story; the creature’s first interaction with mankind is one of violence. This also points out that had Victor not rejected the creature, all of man surely would. Even when the creature comes to the realization of his difference to man, it is of no help to him.
The creature begins to comprehend his existence and relationship to man in an auspicious circumstance for him to fall upon. By great fortune the hovel he occupies is to become his classroom of man. With remarkable speed the creature learns to speak and read. As the creature learns, he reads the notes written by Frankenstein and says the following, “Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust” (Shelley 133). It is at this moment the creature finally realizes he was rejected by his creator. Although this is a very tormenting realization, the creature is still intrigued by man and wishes to be a part of society. “These were the reflections of my hours of despondency and solitude; but when I contemplated the virtues of the cottagers, their amiable and benevolent dispositions, I persuaded myself that when they should become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they would compassionate me and overlook my personal deformity.” (Shelley 133). The creature at this point has the best conceivable chance of making it into society with his education and particular knowledge of the cottagers, a better circumstance is hard to be thought of. The creature waits for some months to further perfect his skills and find the right time.
Despite all the beneficial circumstances provided, when the time arrives the creature is faced with complete failure and rejection. An anonymous writer for The Edinburgh Magazine and Literary Miscellany wrote, “He had just begun to interest the old man in his favour, when their tête-a-tête is unluckily interrupted, and the poor monster is abused and maltreated as heretofore by the villagers. He flies to the woods, furious with rage, and disappointed affection; and, finding on his return that the cottagers had forsaken the place, scared by his portentous visit, he amuses himself in his rage with setting it on fire, and then sets out in search of his creator. Other circumstances occur in his journey to give him a greater antipathy to the human race.” (Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus.) It is at this moment the creature feels rejected by society and lashes out in anger. It is this realization that mankind will never accept him that sets him on the path of vengeance. While the creature seeks to have Frankenstein create a companion, his true intentions are never revealed. Frankenstein realizes the potential disaster he may set loose on mankind by not only doubling the misery already brought forth by the creature, but also having offspring to rival the future existence of man. The creature seeks to get his revenge for being created by destroying Frankenstein.
It is after the realization that man will not tolerate his existence the creature proceeds down the path of destruction, beginning with his first act by burning down the cottage he favors so much. While Frankenstein himself turned from the creature, it was the rejection of man that destroys the innocence of the creature.
